Autocue: a basic guide

So you’re thinking about doing a video and talking about your business…

You know what you want to say and you’ve made a few notes. But you’re a little anxious about talking in front of a camera. Don’t worry: you’re not alone! Maybe you’re worried about how you’re going to look on video. Perhaps you feel nervous and apprehensive. Reading from notes looks amateur and doesn’t instil confidence in your audience. The answer? Use an autocue. The professionals use them; why shouldn’t you?

The autocue is a great piece of kit and is now a key part of our equipment. It makes the whole process of delivering your message to camera much easier and puts you at ease. It allows you to present far more naturally, comfortably and professionally.

So how does it work?

In short, the autocue is set up in front of the camera and the presenter looks directly ahead while reading a scrolling screen placed in front of the camera lens. The script is delivered via a laptop and operator and the words are presented on the screen at a pace that suits the presenter. Mastering the autocue is quick, easy and helps the whole production process. We know that the autocue boosts confidence and helps presenters communicate more effectively with their audiences. It also saves time and therefore reduces costs.
